MUMBAI: What do you do after you've emptied a PET bottle? Throw it into the green bin, right? But a few people and organizations are going beyond the trash can - they are constructing entire livable structures from waste bottles. Difficult to imagine?

The Taj Group of Hotels has joined hands with Andreas Froese, a German ecologist from Honduras, Central America, to build an educational-cum-recreational facility using PET bottles in Redhill, Chennai. The hospitality chain's four Chennai properties have contributed more than 30,000 bottles for the project, which is intended for the benefit of underprivileged communities. So excited is Taj about the initiative that it plans to use the bottles for building even usable items such as coffee tables or chairs in its properties.

So the next time you go to Taj Coromandel and its general manager N Prakash offers a chair, you may want to take a closer look at it.
