The central paramilitary force personnel will be deployed in different parts of the city and called on "only in a difficult situation", said an officer. "The anti-terrorist cells in all police stations have been asked to keep an eye out for suspects in crowded places. We have also asked NGOs to help in bandobast duty. We have distributed audio CDs highlighting security precautions and requested mandals to play them," said Mahesh Patil, DCP, zone XI. While the BMC has made elaborate arrangements by installing CCTV cameras, watchtowers and searchlights at immersion spots, such as Girgaum, Juhu, and Dadar, the police have set up temporary control rooms to monitor the crowd.
Besides posting more than 500 lifeguards and fire brigade officials at the immersion spots, the BMC has also requested the navy and National Disaster Response Force to keep their fleet ready in case of emergency. At least 59 motor boats, ambulances and doctors will be kept on standby at beaches on all immersion days.
Around 1.83 lakh idols were immersed last year and the number is expected to rise this year, said civic officials. This year, the BMC has marked 78 immersion spots and created more than 27 artificial ponds.
BMC FAILS TO KEEP ITS 'NO-POTHOLE' PROMISE
The BMC has failed to keep its promise to fill all potholes before the Ganpati festival. While 34,836 potholes have been reported on the BMC's pothole tracking website since June, 33,145 were filled till Sunday. More than 1,600 pits are yet to be fixed. "We have filled all potholes on major routes. We are now attending to those in bylanes," said a civic official. TNN
