The ICG personnel acted fast on distress call transmitted from the sinking fishing boat, 160nm west of Beypore, was first picked up by motor tanker Aquarius wing. The distress message was relayed to this headquarter late night on September 13. The ship was requested by this headquarter to proceed to datum with maximum speed to rescue the stranded fishermen. The MT Aquarius wing arrived on September 14 at 12.30am and rescued all fishermen.
ICG spokesperson said that despite prevailing inhospitable weather conditions, the ICG helicopter and ship c-134, were tasked to take over the rescued fisherman. The valiant efforts put in by the units resulted in successful recovery of the stranded fishermen 20nm off Kochi. Strong showers along with heavy swell, winds gusting up to 35 km/hr and poor visibility hampered the progress of the operation. Finally, after a six-hour operation by surface and air units, all fishermen were transferred to mainland in helicopter in three trips.
The fishermen were subsequently handed over to local police for further disposal. The rescue mission was coordinated by the MRCC Mumbai and coast guard district headquarters no.4, fort Kochi.
