Bombay HC to hear PIL to teach self-defence to schoolgirls

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court will hear a public interest litigation on Friday seeking direction to the state government to include self-defence in school curriculum.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M S Sanklecha will hear a PIL by NGO Association for Aiding Justice urging direction to the government to include self-defence training in health and physical education in schools. The petition said Maharashtra ranks second in incest-rapes.

On September 5, 2013, during the hearing of several PILs on women safety, the NGO's advocates Jamshed Mistry and Dipesh Siroya said under the Sarva Shikha Abhiyan in Haryana training in self-defence and other martial arts is being provided to girl students at elementary level.

"Schools in the city have started voluntarily introducing self-defence as a subject," said Mistry.

Justice Shah riposted, "We don't want to acknowledge the situation is so unsafe that women have to learn self-defence."

Advocate general Darius Khambata said the government is taking the current situation very seriously.

"Observing that this issue cannot be heard in this PIL on womens safety, the judge de-tagged it and posted it for hearing on Friday. The state government may consider it independently as part of curriculum for schools and not safety measures for curbing attacks on women," the judges said.
