MUMBAI: Of nearly 86,000 species of birds on planet earth, perhaps the most rebuked, cursed and dreaded are the vultures. They are also looked upon as ugly and dirty-birds who act as messengers of death. But in reality, these birds do not deserve such criticism, say bird enthusiasts.

Despite the harsh views, the many people might have about these birds, vultures demonstrate many human qualities. They generally mate for life, do not kill to eat, are very clean, often bathe after a meal, make and maintain a house in harmony, and spend a large amount of time rearing their young ones together.

On the eve of International Vulture Awareness Day BNHS India organized a two-day Vulture Awareness Exhibition, opposite Lion Gate, Fort, Mumbai. The interesting exhibition gave information about vulture species found in India, their role in the ecology, veterinary diclofenac and other threats faced by vultures, efforts to save vultures and the future.

On the second day, the exhibition concluded with an interactive talkby Ian Barber of UK-based Royal Society for Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Kazveen Umrigar, followed by the screening of the film "Vanishing Vultures" on at Hornbill House.
