MUMBAI: The little children of the Sham Nirmal Mitra Mandal in Malad have perfected the art of making Ganesh idols from edible material. This year they have layered they have used crispies and chips .

However , the conscience keepers of the environment go a step further . They do not use chemicals or preservatives so the fish that nibble on it after immersion do not come to harm . "We use Lakshman Rekha repellant on the border of the pandal and sprinkle salt and boric acid around to keep pests away ," said spokesperson Paresh Patel .

Big mandals rely on plaster of paris or claykneaded with durva grass for their idols. Elsewhere , some idols are made from items like grains , pulses , chips and sago . Interesting techniques are used to preserve them to make sure they last ten days .The Ganesh Mitra Mandal in Malad has sewn together a 9.5-ft Ganpati from 30kg of cotton . "The paints are edible colours ," says mandal member Ravi Merchant .
