Trial against Salem to commence next week

MUMBAI: The trial in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case against underworld gangster Abu Salem will commence in the special TADA court next week.

The date was told to Salem's advocate on Wednesday. On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected Salem's plea for quashing all proceedings against him after Portugal's apex court terminated his extradition to India.

At the time of his extradition in November 2005, Salem was wanted in eight cases. Salem was brought to India with his girl friend, actor Monica Bedi who was later convicted in a forgery case and given bail. Bedi had travelled on forged documents to be with Salem in Lisbon. The extradition was the end of a three year legal process for the CBI and the Indian government which commenced in 2002.
