Railways introduce Braille stickers in its coaches

MUMBAI: In a move aimed at facilitating the travel of visually-impaired passengers, the Indian railways plans to provide Braille stickers in its coaches. Coaches are currently provided with signage instructions and seat numbers in the form of vinyl stickers and metallic plates.

The first such coach with disabled-friendly measures will be rolled out from the Integral Coach factory in October and the system will subsequently be scaled up after feedback from the public.

The Indian railways' initiative is a welcome step but it is time the Indian government incorporated disabled-friendly measures in a more holistic way.

It is after all nearly 18 years since the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 provided for integration of disabled persons. The act which was largely voluntary in nature failed to make an impact in a society that has remained largely apathetic to the plight of disabled persons.

A new legislation, the draft of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2012 is now awaiting passage in the Parliament and seeks to put a time-limit within which all buildings, public and private turn disabled-friendly. The bill should be passed at the earliest, to begin with. The outcome will then depend on its effective implementation.
