MUMBAI: Police investigations into the background of NishantAgarwal, arrested for kidnapping and molesting a teenaged schoolgirl at Kandivali (east), have revealed that he had also been accused of cheating by garment traders in Gujarat and Delhi. Two other girls, who recognized Agarwal from his photograph in newspapers, have also come forward, complaining of being molested.
Agarwal, who resides in a Malad apartment and has a ten-year-old son, was arrested by the Samta Nagar police on July 26 while he was trying to offer a lift to a schoolgirl. Two days earlier, he had similarly offered a lift to a 16-year-old girl, then locked her in his car, molested her and shot inappropriate pictures of her on his cellphone. Teams of policemen visited schools and colleges in the neighbourhood to create awareness about security of students and also carried Agarwal's photograph.
Subsequently, an underage girl based in Kandivali (west) approached the Samta Nagar police. She told them that she had been waiting at a bus-stop in Mahavir Nagar when Agarwal stopped by in his car. He asked her for directions to reach her school and then offered her a lift as she was headed to the same destination. The girl was horrified when Agarwal began to touch her inappropriately. After a brief struggle, she managed to get out of his car and flee. In January this year, Agarwal had targetted a young girl who had stepped out for a morning walk at Dindoshi.
Agarwal runs a saree business. Traders in Surat and Delhi lodged complaints against him after he ordered sarees from them but did not pay up to the tune of Rs 3 to 4 crores. "We have seized Agarwal's phone and computer and sent them for an analysis. He has been remanded to police custody till August 1," said a senior official.
