MUMBAI: Armed with the knowledge that 80% of accidents on city roads is due to driver's fault, the Mumbai RTOs now plan to sensitize driving licence applicants on the top 10 mistakes committed by a driver.
The applicants will be apprised of the worst-case scenarios and the various errors committed by a driver, leading to fatal mishaps.
"We have decided to conduct an audio-visual presentation along with a lecture by RTO staffers to every citizen applying for a learner's licence,'' said regional transport officer (Tardeo) K T Golani. "It is a fact that a majority of accidents in the city and across the state is due to human error. It was also revealed in a survey conducted by the transport department recently. Armed with this knowledge, we have decided to focus on ten major points (driver's faults) while giving driving licences."
He stated that during the learner's licence tests, the applicants will be sensitized on road safety and warned about the Top 10 faults by drivers which lead to fatal mishaps. "We will brainwash the candidates on road discipline before they actually receive driving licences,'' he said.
Data compiled by the transport department revealed that 80% of accidents happened because of human error, and mechanical faults and road conditions accounted for only 6% and 5% of mishaps.
"It is very important to create awareness on road safety at the time of giving licence,'' Golani said, adding that road safety campaigns should not be restricted to just one week or a fortnight in a year. He stated that every applicant will be apprised of the "Top 10 mistakes" made by a driver which leads to loss of lives on road and also ruins the life of the accused person. "If you are behind the wheel, you will not only go to jail. Your reputation will be tarnished, you will end up speding lot of money on advocates, your passport will be impounded and the trial can go for more than two years,'' he pointed out, adding that candidates will be warned about the consequences.
Rash and negligent driving topped the list of Top 10 drivers' mistakes. This was followed by overspeeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. The other mistakes committed by a driver were -- dangerous overtaking; not following traffic signal; talking on mobilephone or viewing SMSs, sending SMSs while driving; not using upper dipper lights properly and the left or right indicator lights; driving under fatigued conditions or non-stop driving without rest; eating or talking too much while driving leading to loss of focus; and not checking the vehicle/maintaining it properly before setting out for long journeys.
