Flight delays to plague Mumbai

MUMBAI: Flight delays will plague Mumbai airport for the next two to three months, said officials at the airport. With monsoons sending the flight schedules out of gear in the last two months and heavy passenger traffic expected in the next two months, officials feel that the delays will only increase.

To add to this, the stick-to-slot rule introduced by the ministry of civil aviation three years ago is also dissolved in practice.

The rule was introduced to plug delays which plagued the airport during peak hours. As per the rule, flights not sticking to their time slot would be sent to the end of the departure or arrival queue. This way, those who are on time would be able to take-off on time.

Officials said that the rule has been dissolved in practice and is not followed strictly. "With the attention of the ministry shifting to other things, the rule is not followed. Hence, the delays have increased again," said a senior airport official.
