The doctor admitted consuming more than a dozen pills a day to carry out his routine work. He had been consuming the drug for around eight years.
Dr Yusuf Merchant, president of Drug Abuse Information Rehabilitation and Research Centre, said, "It is a synthetic narcotic and is the second-most preferred prescription drug for abuse after codeine." He added that some patients have been known to consume 80 tablets a day. "The drug changes the perception of pain. The worrisome part is that many women, even housewives, are hooked on the drug," said Dr Merchant.
The drug, mainly supposed to be used as a painkiller, was banned in India on May 23 after many other nations, such as US, UK, Canada, Japan, banned it. Their bans were based on the finding that the drug was acting like a suicide agent, more so when combined with alcohol.
In India, a 2010 study published in the journal of the Indian Society of Toxicology found direct links between dextropropoxyphene and the sudden death of three patients. The presence of the drug emerged during autopsies in a Bangalore hospital. The study underlined how its availability should be restricted.
"The affordability of the drug (less than Rs 20 per strip) added to the abuse potential," said FDA commissioner Mahesh Zagade. He added that the free samples of the drug supplied to hospitals by medical representatives were misused at times by doctor themselves.
