MUMBAI: Estate agent, Alok Dinesh Tanna, who allegedly made a hoax call to the police control room regarding a possible blast at the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) at the income tax building in Ballard Pier to postpone a property auction verdict, has been granted bail by the court. Tanna (29) told the court that he had lost his mobile phone on July 26, the day when the hoax call was made.
The Mumbai crime branch had arrested Tanna on Thursday. However, police said that Tanna wanted to delay an auction and hence plotted this story. Crime branch said that Tanna thought that if he made a hoax call, the auction verdict, which was going in someone else's favour, would be postponed and he could manage to get a favourable order at the next hearing. But he ran out of luck when the police control room tracked the cell phone number from which he had made the call.
Tanna told the court that the police control room had received a hoax call at 3 pm about a bomb being planted at DRT office. He said that however his phone went missing at 11 am on that day and that he had lodged a complaint with the CST railway police about his missing mobile phone. The court granted him bail on paying Rs 20,000 cash and directed him to attend the police office whenever called.
Crime branch had said that on July 26, Tanna anonymously called up the police control room and said he was passing off an important information that he had overheard. He said a bomb has been placed at the DRT and it may go off anytime. Within a few minutes, several police teams, the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) and sniffer dogs, were rushed to the spot. After three hours of search, nothing was found. The MRA Marg police registered an offence against unknown persons and the crime branch also conducted a parallel probe. On Thursday, the police questioned Tanna at length who later admitted to have made the hoax call. "Tanna claims that the order was likely to go in other party's favour and hence to cancel or postpone the order he made this hoax call," said the police.
