‘Why delay in putting safety barrier?’

MUMBAI: Two instances of tyre burst on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway have led to different fates of vehicle occupants. In the latest, four people died on Friday. In the earlier, a couple escaped with minor injuries. The difference was made by a safety barrier made of cables and metal posts. So, transport experts ask, why is the barrier not present along the entire length of the expressway or at least on its accident-prone stretches?

Of the high-speed corridor's 94 km, only a 2.5-km section (between Kamshet tunnel and Talwali toll post towards Pune) has the barrier, installed on an experimental basis in April. Plans were for it to be extended to 12 km, but there has been no action since then.

A source in the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation ( MSRDC) blamed the delay on a lack of political will and bureaucratic red tape. "There are also vested interests—favoured contractors, etc. This has delayed the tendering process and the issue of work order."

Transport expert Jagdeep Desai said that by now the expressway should also have had soft trenches along it to minimize the impact of accidents. "If the cable wire barrier were to fail in preventing vehicles from breaking through, the trenches would trap them, preventing them from entering the opposite lane. Such low-cost measures should have been taken long ago. Their absence is leading to avoidable deaths."
