All airports to have air quality monitoring units

MUMBAI: The directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) has asked all airports in the country to have an air quality monitoring system. The airports will have to submit the air quality data to the DGCA on a quarterly and annual basis. The circular is one among the many circulars DGCA has released to monitor the environmental cost of aircraft activity as demanded by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The circular states that airports which cannot have a station install a mobile station which can monitor the air inside and outside the airport. The station should also be able to monitor basic meteorological parameters like wind speed, temperature, wind direction and relative humidity. "Aircraft emissions contain various pollutants which in turn can involve broader environmental issues related to ground level ozone, acid rain and climate change and cause potential risks to public health and environment. Unlike most transport modes, aircraft travel longer distances at varied altitudes producing emissions that have an adverse impact on air quality in the local, regional and global levels," states the circular.

The circular would be applicable to all airports handling more than 50,000 movements annually.
