MUMBAI: Three newborn puppies who had been cruelly buried under a huge dump of electric cables, defunct cycles, rusting gadgets, tree branches and several coils of barbed wires were rescued from the Powai campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) on Friday (July 12) evening.
The three puppies were in a state of extreme pain as they were being practically eaten alive by maggots, after their unknown perpetrator had deliberately trapped them under the pile of barbed wires and e-trash. Only one of the puppies has now survived and taken to a foster home for care by animal rights activists Amit Pathak and Christina Lobo Jha.
Two young IIT students had first noticed the faint cries of the puppies and so tried their best to remove them. However, the barbed wires and other rusting electrical equipment injured their hands as they reached for the newborns,'' said the founder of Plants and Animals Welfare Society ( PAWS) Nilesh Bhanage.
Once the animal activists arrived, they were shocked to see hundreds of maggots literally spilling out of the eyes, ears and genitals of the poor puppies.
The puppies were screaming in pain. Someone wanted to kill them in such a slow, tortuous way. They were rushed to the clinic of veterinarian Dr Umesh Jadhav, but two of them succumbed to their injuries,'' informed Christina.
While activist Amit Pathak thanked the IIT students whose efforts led to the survival of one pup, he added emotionally: Whoever threw these newborns inside this e-trash is surely going to hell one day.''
