Growth in domestic tourist visits in 2012 higher than foreign tourist visits

MUMBAI: The number of domestic tourist visits to states and union territories registered an increase of about 20% during the year 2012 over 2011 as compared to an increase of about 16% in the corresponding period last year.

According to the latest statistics on tourism in India released by ministry of tourism, the number of domestic tourist visits to the states and union territories was 1,036 million in 2012 as compared to 865 million in 2011 and 748 million in 2010.

The top ten states in terms of number of domestic tourist visits during 2012, were Andhra Pradesh (about 207 million), Tamil Nadu (184 million), Uttar Pradesh (168 million), Karnataka (94 million), Maharashtra (66 million), Madhya Pradesh (53 million), Rajasthan (about 29 million), Uttarakhand (about 27 million), Gujarat (24 million) and West Bengal (23 million).

The contribution of these states was about 85% to the total number of domestic tourist visits during 2012.

On the other hand, the number of foreign tourist visits to states and union territories registered a growth of 6% during the year 2012 over 2011 as compared to a growth of 8.9% in 2011 over 2010. The number of foreign tourist visits to the states/union territories was about 21 million in 2012 as compared to about 20 million in 2011 and 18 million in 2010.
