MUMBAI: The BEST committee members have demanded that a depot manager should be held responsible for any filthy condition in a bus.
At this week's committee meeting, BJP member Srinivas Tripathi pointed out that he had witnessed water leaking from the roof of bus No 545 at Bhandup. "When I pointed this out to the conductor, he said he too had informed the depot manager, but in vain. We demand that depot managers should be pulled up for bad condition of buses on roads,'' he said.
Former committee chairman Ashok Patil too blamed the depot manager for deploying bad quality buses on roads. "Some of them are arrogant and refuse to listen to subordinates. If buses are in bad shape and have bad seats, they still direct the drivers/conductors to take the buses on the roads,'' he informed the panel.
Congress member Shivji Singh said he had come across complaints of soiled seats, torn seats in AC buses. "Recently, there was a picture of a commuter holding an umbrella inside an AC bus. This is shocking. Somebody has to take the responsibility,'' he demanded.
BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta said these were isolated cases. "In a fleet of more than 4,000 vehicles, almost all buses, including the AC vehicles, are in good condition. There could be one or two cases and these complaints will be looked into,'' he added.
