BMC engineer in graft case

MUMBAI: The city unit of Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) have launched a manhunt to trace executive junior BMC engineer of M east ward who demanded a bribe of Rs one lakh from the water pipe contractor.

On Wednesday the ACB had laid a trap and arrested a private man Nitin Gandhale for demanding and accepting a bribe amount of Rs 30,000 from a private contractor. Early Thursday morning the ACB arrested Gandhale's associate Arun Dalvi, they are looking for junior engineer Rahul Pawar who is the main culprit.

According to the ACB, last week a private contractor who takes repairing and newel work of waterpipes in the Chembur area had filed a complaint with the ACB alleging that the BMC engineer of M east ward Rahul Pawar was demanding bribe. Complainant job profile was to repair old rusted water pipe and avail new water connections.

Complainant whose name has been withheld told police that Pawar allegedly told him that if he was to get his contracts sanctions he needs to pay a bribe of Rs one lakh one time or else his contract will not be passed. Complainant told Pawar that there was very less profit margin and he will not be able to pay so much amount. Pawar than bargained the amount and told complainant that he has to atleast shed 50,000. After much bargaining the amount was brought down to Rs 30,000.'' Said Rajesh Mor, additional commissioner of police (ACB).

On Wednesday when complainant called Pawar on his cell phone to hand over the cash, Pawar told him that he was out of office and complainant should pay the money to his private man Nitin Gandhale. No sooner did Gandhale accepted the bribe the ACB sleuths arrested him. Gandhale admitted that he accepted the money on behalf of Pawar. Police have arrested Pawar's contractor Arun Dalvi while he himself is absconding.

Meanwhile the Navi Mumbai ACB on Wednesday caught two senior officials of MSEB from Panvel red handed accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000. The two senior official of MSEB arrested have been identified as Vijay Sitaram Shinde, Addl. Divisional Clerk and Shivprasad Shankar Thakur, Lower Divisional Clerk. Both had demanded and accepted the bribe from a contractor.
