MUMBAI: A day after an engineering student was killed in a hitand-run incident on Western Express Highway in Goregaon, the police arrested a truck driver for hitting the victim's motorbike. But the victim's family, who inspected the accident spot, believe that the poor condition of the road is equally to blame and the public works department (PWD) has gotten off easily.

Jaideep Karveer (21), the victim, was a third-year student of DJ Sanghvi College. Eight days ago, he had bagged an internship with Godrej in Vikhroli . He would head to work around 6 am on his motorbike and return by 4 pm. "The sequence of events leading to his death is still a mystery. He left home on Wednesday with his helmet on, but the police claim he wasn't wearing any as they couldn't find a helmet at the accident site. I spent an hour examining the stretch; it's pockmarked , has uneven paver blocks and is water-logged ," said Jaideep's uncle Deepak.

Initially, the police had told the Karveers that Jaideep had lost his balance owing to the uneven stretch and was then hit by a truck. On Thursday, officers questioned the truck's driver, Devnarayan Patel (39), who said Jaideep had overtaken him from one side before being hit. "Patel's allegations are baseless. If Jaideep had been overtaking, how was his bike unscathed? We inspected his bike at the police station," said Deepak. "It is high time authorities in charge of road maintenance are booked in accident cases."

Patel, who hails from Gujarat , had driven to Bhandup to deliver plaster of Paris consignments . He was given bail for Rs 15,000 by a metropolitan court on Thursday.

PWD executive engineer B B Lohar, who inspected the accident spot, said there were no potholes and no water-logging . "The paver blocks at the spot were laid long before the mishap and every pothole is fixed by us immediately. A team of labourers has been deployed 24x7 to monitor and treat potholes on time. As it was raining heavily on Wednesday, there could have been water flowing along that portion of the road. But this cannot be the cause of the mishap. Even the police have stated clearly that the youth was killed due to the negligence of the truck driver, who hit him from behind."

Jaideep's father, Dattatreya, who runs his own business, said the youth was a responsible and careful rider.

They inspected the accident spot and found it to be pockmarked and water-logged . They believe that the poor condition of the stretch is equally responsible for the death. They say Jaideep was wearing a helmet, but the police claim otherwise.
