7/11 accused seeks court permission to use laptop in jail

MUMBAI: Ehtesham Siddiqui, one of the 7/11 accused who has been shown as a bomb planter, on Tuesday filed an application before the MCOCA court asking permission to use a laptop in the jail premises "to study his case for argument."

Siddiqui, who is in jail since his arrest in 2006, has argued in the court and challenged several police claims. The basis for his argument was some RTI replies that he got from the state government run institutions. Siddiqui's counsel advocate Sharif Shaikh filed the application which read: "It is the settled law and prosecution and defense will be given equal opportunity for putting their case. However, the prosecution has opportunities to collect the documents even at the last stage of the trial among the other opportunities." Shaikh said, "We are busy in more than 15 cases. It is possible that the accused may search some citation of any important judgment which could help him in the trial."

Siddiqui, who is accused of planting an RDX bomb at Churchgate station in a Virar train. He filed several RTI applications and sought details about the witnesses against him in the case, the panchas, and even asked the court to summon them in the court. One such witness had in his statement said that he was going to meet his friend at a hospital where the later wroks. The witness in his police statement said that he had seen Siddiqui at Chuchgate station on the day of the blasts. However, an RTI reply stated that the witness' friend about whom he mentioned did not work at any hospital and that the hospital had no employee with that name.
