MUMBAI: The husband and in-laws of a 42-year-old woman, who committed suicide on Monday, have been booked by the Bhayander police on abetment charges. No arrests have been made yet. Police officials said the victim, Hema Doshi, was being physically and mentally harassed for dowry.
Hema was found hanging from the fan in her apartment at Bhayander's Nandkishore society on Monday. According to the police, she had tied the knot with Pankaj Doshi back in 2001 and they have a ten-year-old daughter.
Hema's family complained that she started being harassed physically and mentally for dowry, soon after her marriage. The family had been told that Pankaj had a successful computer spare parts business, but they realized otherwise after the wedding. Hema used to confide in her brother Chirag about the daily torture she had to undergo. Hema's family has also alleged that Pankaj was unemployed for the past few years and would demand money from Hema for his daily expenses.
A case has been registered against Pankaj, 45, his father, Mansukhlal, 60, and mother, Dhanlakshmi, under sections 498 (A) for cruelty and 306 for abetment of suicide under the IPC by the Bhayander police.
