MUMBAI: Gamdevi police arrested a 68-year-old man who posed as a police officer and tried cheating a local developer of Rs 300.
The police identified the accused as Madhukar Keshav Waagh, a resident of Kanjur Marg. He was nabbed by locals and handed over to police on Wednesday. Police said that the accused, who was accompanied by one more person, tried to con a builder, Mohammed Iqbal Ansari, 62, near Nana Chowk, wholesale market.
Waagh posed as a police officer and asked Ansari to pay him Rs 300, when he had come to buy plumbing products in Nana Chowk, police said. "The accused was in plain clothes and when Ansari asked for the identification, Waagh failed to do so, due to which the locals along with Ansari took Waagh to Gamdevi police station," said assistant police inspector, Sudhi Dalvi of Gamdevi police station.
Waagh was booked under section 170 (impersonating a public servant), 420 (cheating), 34 (common intention) and was produced before a local court on Wednesday, which sent him to police custody till May 5.
