With data erased by virus, MPSC defers 2 more exams

MUMBAI: The virus attack that wiped out the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) data has resulted in two more exams being postponed. The MPSC on Tuesday deferred the April 21 exam for insurance officers and the April 28 test to select officers for the agriculture department.

Close to 6,000 candidates were to take the insurance exam. In fact, it is the second time that the exam has been postponed—it was earlier scheduled to take place on February 24.

Close to 800 candidates had signed up for the April 28 MPSC exam to select officers for the agriculture department . But with the Commission losing all data following the March 31 virus attack, fresh dates for both, the insurance and agriculture department tests, are still to be decided.

The virus had earlier forced the MPSC to postpone its flagship preliminary state public service commission exam , which was to be held on April 7. The exam was to be taken by 3.25 lakh candidates to fill up 265 posts of class 1 and 2officers, but with the data lost the MPSC could not issue hall tickets. However, question papers for the test have been dispatched to district headquarters and the panel has asked the treasury to extend police security until the exam is held.

"We have decided to fix a deadline to allow re-registering for the exam. Ever since we announced the postponement, candidates have been registering slowly," MPSC chairman Sudhir Thackeray said. Only about 2.4 lakh candidates have registered to take the exam, while the MPSC is expecting at least 1 lakh more students to apply. "Once the registration process closes, we will have to see if schools supervisors are available to conduct the test. After weighing these factors, we will declare fresh exam dates," Thackeray said.

Meanwhile, the MPSC has decided to cut ties with VastIndia , the IT firm it had outsourced its work to for registering candidates and issuing hall tickets . "We have decided not to work with them. I cannot issue fresh tenders now. My officers are working with their personnel to re-register candidates," Thackeray said. Close to 3.25 lakh students had registered for the preliminary state public service commission exam that was to be held on Sunday. It has now been pushed. The new date will be announced soon.
