A senior RTO official said, "The MIAL, which presently runs the prepaid service at the domestic airport, has failed to implement a transparent cab booking system for passengers. Some of the local unions have managed to disrupt the new system, and this is uncalled for. If MIAL is unable to run the service properly, we will demand that an authorised taxi union should be given a chance."
MIAL officials, however, said that they were serious about implementing the new computerised system of issuing taxi number and other details to passengers. "We are sorting out the differences with a few smaller unions. It will take a couple of days,'' a spokesperson for MIAL stated.
The RTO has now asked MIAL to lodge police complaints against "rogue" drivers opposing the commuter-friendly system. It has got support from Mumbai Taximen Union, whose leader A L Quadros also plans to approach the court and get the system restarted. "I have collected signatures of more than 2,000 genuine cabbies and they are in favour of the new transparent system. It is surprising why the MIAL is unable to implement it. They should not bow down to the pressures from smaller unions operating at the airport,'' he said.
The new system will ensure that there are no refusals and cabbies without badges and uniforms are not allowed to pick up passengers.
