MUMBAI: Every year huge numbers of animals suffer and die as a result of natural disasters in India. This loss has a dramatic impact on people as they desperately need healthy animals in order to survive and to rebuild their lives. Taking action to ensure animals are protected when disasters strike, the government of India in collaboration with World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is holding Asia's first national conference on animal disaster management in New Delhi on April 17-18.

The conference will be co-hosted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and WSPA, which has been working globally during disasters to protect animals for almost 50 years. Currently a WSPA team is in Maharashtra helping animals caught-up in the drought by providing feed and shelter in cattle camps to benefit 9,000 buffalos and cattle.

Sharad Pawar, the Union minister of agriculture, will inaugurate the conference, while M Shashidhar Reddy, vice-chairman of NDMA, will preside over the event.

Other key officials, policy and decision makers from both the states across India and the central government, will also join international representatives from Australia and Latin America at the two-day conference.

The event will focus on safeguarding animals to ensure communities are better able to recover in the aftermath of adversities such as droughts, floods and other natural disasters. Delegates will discuss how best to integrate animal welfare into emergency plans to support safer and more resilient communities before, during and after disasters.

Diary note

Animals and people both experience the terrible effects of disasters: hunger and thirst, illness and injury. WSPA's dedicated teams work across continents, helping people to protect their animals in times of crisis by preparing citizens and governments through training, support and emergency interventions. Helping animals, helps people too.

In India, WSPA has been protecting animals and communities during disasters for the last five years. WSPA is set to build on this work supporting the NDMA to help India take the lead in Asia by developing a national action plan to ensure India's animals, and therefore its communities are better protected during disasters.
