MUMBAI: Twelve years after an elderly woman and her grandson were found dead in their Versova apartment, the Bombay high Court held a Wadala resident guilty of double murder. A division bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice P D Kode upheld the trial court's verdict and sentenced Mohammed Yunus alias Guddu Abdul Jabbar Choudhari to life imprisonment.

The incident dates back to December 23, 2001, when city resident Chandani came back from work and found her mother and her son dead in their Versova flat. While the elderly woman Sheeladevi was strangled to death, Chandani's young son Kunal was smothered. The prosecution's case was that Choudhari had demanded money from Chandani and when she failed to comply he had robbed the house and murdered her mother and son.

The police recovered ornaments from a moneylender who said that Choudhari had pawned it at his shop. The accused was also unable to explain the blood stains on his clothes. Choudhari claimed that he had been falsely implicated in the case and the duo had been murdered by some other person. The high court dismissed the appeal filed by Choudhari.

In the premises aforesaid considering all the circumstances and found established by the prosecution the same do form formidable chain pointing towards sole guilt of the accused in committing murder of Sheeladevi and Kunal and robbing the articles from the flat,'' said the judges.
