MUMBAI: The biggest weekend in Indian racing, the Invitation Weekend, gets underway from Saturday at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club. Known as national championships of horse racing, top performers from various racing clubs are invited to participate in various races by the Turf Authority of India.
The four big races, the Indian Turf Invitation Cup, Sprinters' Cup, Stayers' Cup and the Super Mile are the most sought after events spread over two days. While the Sprinters' Cup, Stayers' Cup and Super Mile have remained the same loaded with top quality performers, the Invitation Cup will be in a new avatar this Sunday.
The Invitation Cup was limited to top four-year-olds from across the country with Derby winners from various centres invited to participate. But this year Turf Authority of India has decided to throw open the prestigious race for four-year-olds and over. This has resulted in top performers from previous years taking on classic crop of this year.
To make things even for contenders in the Invitation Cup, the four-year-olds will carry 55 kgs and the older horses will shoulder 59 kgs. Fillies and mares will get an allowance of one-and-a-half kgs. The 2400-metre grass race on the right handed Kolkata course will be worth Rs 1,00,00,000 to the winner. The successful owner will receive a trophy valued at Rs 3,00,000.
With top international jockeys like Richard Hughes, Martin Dwyer, Jimmy Fortune etc. in fray, the competition at Kolkata this weekend will certainly be of high standard.
