MUMBAI: Mumbai and Maharashtra can expect safer borders and roads ahead. Mishaps on the roads involving overloaded goods vehicles from Gujarat and northern parts of the country will hopefully reduce on the roads in Mumbai region. Similarly, illegal trading of arms, ammunition, liquor and narcotics will also stop. Control on overloading will ensure that state's road do not get damaged more frequently.
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and his deputy Ajit Pawar on Wednesday inaugurated first of the newly developed border check post on the state's Gujarat border at Dapcheri in Dahanu, 60 km from Dahisar on Ahmedabad highway.
However, Pawar termed the location of the post as wrongly chosen saying that there were other routes to avoid the post. However, chief minister assured to ensure that only this route is followed by the goods vehicles and that state had to prefer this land for Dapcheri post due to land acquisition issues. The post has 15 lanes for traffic towards Gujarat and nine lanes for traffic towards Mumbai.
The computarised checking and collection of processing fees on the goods vehicles (Rs 20 for matador, Rs 40 for trucks and Rs 80 for multi-axel vehicles) will not only help earn revenue for developing the posts but will also ensure more revenue generation for sales and excise departments. The scanners to check arms and ammunition are being fitted which will get completed within next six months.
Other two posts at Saoner near Nagpur on MP border and at Mandrup near Solapur on Karnataka border are also ready with the new state-of-the-art terminals. "The entire 22 border check post redevelopment project with private partnership is costing Rs 1000 crore with each post costing nearly Rs 40 to 50 crore. The developers will earn their investment through processing fees for 24.6 years," said MSRDC chief engineer Subhash Nage.
