Taxi unions have threatened to go on strike from the first week of April and transporters from April 1 midnight to protest against the increase in third party insurance premiums. Autorickshaw drivers, municipal workers and hawkers will also stay away from work on April 1 to press for their respective demands.
Taxi union leader A L Quadros said the date on which the strike will begin will be announced by the end of the month.
"Third party insurance premiums have been hiked for the second consecutive year," he said. "While IRDA increased the premium by 20% last year, it will now be hiked by 14.5% from April 1. Why should we pay the premium when the fatal accident rate involving taxis is not even 1% in Mumbai?"
The transporters' stir was declared on Wednesday.
"We had a meeting of transporters from across the country in Mumbai on Wednesday and decided to organize a nationwide chakka jam from April 1 midnight if there is no rollback in third party insurance premium (hiked by 107% this year)," All India Motor Transport Congress president Bal Malkit Singh said. "Our other demands include a one-time annual toll, uniform diesel prices across the country, industry status to transporters and national permit for tourist buses."
The municipal workers' union led by Sharad Rao has planned its strike to oppose the replacement of octroi with local body tax. Rao, who also leads an auto union, said rickshaw drivers will stay off the roads for a day to demand medical insurance and pension benefits, issuance of one lakh more permits and revival of 30,000 dead permits.
Hawker unions will hold their stir for the implementation of the national policy on urban street vendors and for more licences from the civic body, said sources.
