MUMBAI: A section of villagers of the Vasai-Virar region have written to the Chief Justice of the Bombay high court asking to look into the issue of excluding 29 villages from the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) which is pending in the court since August 2011.
In a letter dated January 21, 2013 to the Chief Justice Mohit Shah, villagers of Kofrad, Wagholi, Navde, Nale and Bhuigaon have asked the court to consider their plea as development work in the villages have been affected. The VVMC was formed in July 2009 wide a notification by the state government.
Four municipal councils-Virar, Nalasopara, Vasai and Navghar Manikpur and 59 villages were merged to form the civic corporation. A total of 29 villages had protested the move. The villagers had stated that despite giving their written objection to joining the municipality, they were forcibly made part of the VVMC.
After much protest by the villages, the state government excluded the 29 villages from the municipality on May 31, 2011. The decision was challenged in the high court by the VVMC in July 2011, following which the court stayed the government's decision to withdraw the villages from the municipal limits. Technically, the 29 villages are still under the VVMC but villagers say that the municipality has not undertaken any development work in these villages. The villagers have asked the court to give its verdict on the matter so that development work, including providing basic infrastructure like roads and street lights can be carried out. The last hearing in the case was held in August 2011.
