MUMBAI: On Sunday, the Mumbai airport reported two instances of unattended baggage which sparked a bomb alert. Around noon, an unattended bag was spotted inside the international terminal in the departure area. The bag was black and had been there for more than 30 minutes. A Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was summoned to check the bag. In the evening, around 8 pm, a bag was found abandoned on a trolley at the entrance of the domestic terminal. BDDS was summoned to check the bag. In both case, the bags turned out to be empty and the bomb alarm a hoax.
According to Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials, such incidents are fairly common at the airport with many passengers either forgetting or even deliberately dumping an empty bag. There are two such instances in three days on an average. "The BDDS has to be summoned almost everyday to check these bags. Though most of these are harmless, we cannot take a change in the current circumstances. All checks are done and things have to be verified," said a senior CISF official.
Officials said that often passengers carrying excess baggage shift their stuff into bigger bags and leave the spare one at the terminal. This happens mostly at the international terminal where passengers do not have the time to leave the bag with someone or even seek adjustment from the airline crew. "The problem is that these bags are dumped in the middle of the terminal. We keep an eye on the bag and if nobody comes to claim it, we conduct the checks," said another CISF official.
