MUMBAI: Union housing and poverty alleviation minister Ajay Maken said on Monday that his ministry will soon table a proposal for rehabilitation of slums on central government lands before the Union Cabinet.
With a sizable percentage of slum structures in Mumbai situated on lands owned or in possession of the army, navy, air force, the state government has been pushing for a redevelopment model for these. Such slums cannot be covered under state-run SRA. Maken held a meeting with chief minister Prithviraj Chavan over housing matters.
During the meeting, Chavan demanded a separate policy framework under Rajiv Awaas Yojana (RAY) for the state. He argued that the existing framework might not be sustainable in Mumbai, Pune, and Thane.
Maken however said that a separate policy guideline would be difficult. He however said he would look into the demands. The state drew flak for shoddy implementation of Integrated Housing Slum Development Programme, and the Basic Services for Urban Poor.
