A divison bench of Justice S J Vazifdar and Justice Mridula Bhatkar were hearing a petitions by doctors who were refused registration by Maharashtra Medical Council stating that the courses in which they acquired doctorate were not recognised by MCI. The judges have asked attorney general Goolam Vahanvati and advocate genera Darius Khambata to assist with the matter. The judges observed that they do not want to pass any order which will have serious repercussions. It is embarassing to know what the State (governmnent) has been doing. How can it run courses which are not reconised ? So manner students will suffer because of this,'' said Justice Vazifdar.
One of the petitions was by Dr Manoj Kashid, who acquired his post graduate degree in M.S. (Orthopaedic) from the Institute of Naval Medicine, INHS, Asvini, Colaba, in 2008. After completing his MBBS from Lokmanya Tilak Medical College, Sion, in 2002, Kashid did a one-year mandatory internship. Later he joined Institute of Naval Medicine for post graduate course.
His advocates argued that several students who have passed out way back in 1999 are also suffering because the MCI refused to recognise over 44 courses. They said several government-run medical colleges conduct courses that are non-recognised and derecognised by MCI. and grant registration to several students who acquired the degree from the Institute of Naval Medicine. He has also sought compensation from the government, the INM and Mumbai University for ruining his career. He said at the time of admission the students were informed that application is made for recognition of the course and would be granted soon.
