MUMBAI: There was a public protest outside Vashi railway station on Monday evening to protest the railway fare surcharge of Rs 5 per ticket. This surcharge was implemented since January 22. More then 500 Passengers gave their support to the movement which will spread to other railway stations of Navi Mumbai in the days to come.
CIDCO funded Railway Vashi Creek Bridge was constructed sometimes in 1995. In order to recover the cost of construction stated to be Rs 100 crore, a surcharge of Rs. 2 per ticket was set till the amount is paid back with Interest by Railway to CIDCO.
Even this Rs 100 crore were paid from tax payers' money since CIDCO is owned by Maharashra Government. Contract for construction of the Bridge was given to M/s AFCONS. Surcharge was enhanced to Rs. 3/- per ticket , by adding another component of Re 1 for MUTP.
As a result, second class railway ticket from Vashi to CST is Rs 15 while for equal distance to other stations is Rs 10 only. Navi Mumbaikar on every travel to & from Mumbai is squeezed by Rs. 10 for a return journey, said a protester of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
AAP convener Ravi Srivastava wrote to Minister of Railways Pawan Kumar Bansal in the last week of January 2013 and also to railway Board Chairman to stop this surcharge instantly.
Aam Aadmi Party has now demanded from Railways to withdraw this unjustified surcharge forthwith or in the Railway Budget to be presented on February 26, 2013.
