One night's stay by foreign tourists can fetch crores, says industry body

MUMBAI: An industry body in Mumbai is making efforts to persuade foreign tourists to extend their stay in the city by at least one day. This can augment the state's foreign exchange earnings by crores of rupees, it says. The Indian Merchants Chamber encourages tourists to linger and visit historical monuments in Mumbai. Pradip Madhavji, chairman of the tourism committee of the IMC says, "An additional stay of one night by foreign visitors in Mumbai will increase the foreign exchange earnings for Maharashtra in excess of the equivalent of Rs 554 crore." This projection is based on several calculations. "Over 6 million foreign nationals visit India each year on business or pleasure. The foreign exchange earnings for Maharashtra are now in excess of the equivalent of Rs 615 crores. Based on these figures the average spent per foreign visitor to our country is USD 2,500 (USD 15 billion for 6 million visitors)," Madhavji says.

IMC says that their average duration of stay in the country is 22 days. The per day spent is USD 114 (USD 2,500 in 22 days). Around 30 per cent of foreign arrivals, that is 1.8 million visitors, either enter, depart or transit through Mumbai. "Let's say we succeed in getting half of this 30 per cent or 900,000 to stay for an additional night. Their spend for this period based on USD 114 per day is USD 98 million that is equivalent to Rs 554 crore," Madhavji says.
