MUMBAI: Lack of water has led to people to resort to desperate situations, residents of Manmad on Thursday resorted to a day long bandh to draw the State government's attention to their plight.
The protest was noticeable as it was supported by all the political parties participated in bandh. The residents and everyone supported the cause by closing all the establishments in the town. Shops, schools and markets too were shut as people stayed indoors.
Manmad in Nashik that has close to 1.50 lakh population, is the town famous for its onion markets and is now getting water supply only once in 25 days. The problem arose for Manmad as the Wagharwadi dam that used to supply water to the dam got filled only till 5 per cent. The state government has then decided to supply water to them from one of the canals in the Palkhed canal.
However, water from the canal is released to Manmad once in two months. The residents are now demanding that the state government immediately release water from the Palkhed canal to them and reduce the period of supplying water to them from once in two months to once in one and a half months.
