He stated that similar dormitories have been constructed for the convenience of passengers at Thane, Kalyan and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus stations.
He further said that with a view to improve sale of unreserved tickets in city area, Jan Sadharan Ticket Booking Sevak scheme was introduced as a pilot project to sell railway tickets outside the railway premises at 178 locations of CR in 2012.
CR general manager Subodh Jain said that CR's suburban system was the lifeline of Mumbai. "To augment the capacity, 15 car suburban services have been introduced between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Kalyan on main line. At present, 16 services are being run, out of which six are during peak hours," he stated.
"With this addition, the total services on CR in Mumbai have now gone upto 1,596 per day, connecting 77 stations carrying 39 lakh passengers daily. Besides, all services of Main Line and Trans-harbour line are now operated with 12-car rakes," Jain stated.
To enhance security at railway stations, CCTV surveillance have been provided at important stations — X-ray baggage detectors and door frame metal detectors have been deployed at major stations.
Recently, a dog kennel was opened at Wadibunder which enhances the availability of sniffer dogs near the stations in case of emergency.
"A 4-digit security help-line (1275) has been provided to assist commuters," Jain added.
