THANE: The family court here and a voluntary organization Muskan co-hosted a unique event in the court premises last week, aimed to build greater rapport and understanding between parents pursuing divorce and their anxiety-driven children.

The parents, who are otherwise living separately prior to the verdict on their divorce case, shared quality time together with their children in a three hour-long entertainment event held in the court premises.

A variety of entertainment shows for minors was organized to keep the children engaged with their parents, even as sweets and pastries were distributed for children up to the age of nine to celebrate a birthday of one of the child here.

It was a pleasant change for a majority of the parents here who otherwise share bitter vibes with one another. On this day, the children were given complete and unrestricted access to both the parents,'' a lawyer told TOI.

The entire programme is said to be the brain child of Principle Judge Dr S D Joshi, who has been dealing with divorce matters. Lawyers here said the initiative was aimed to give the child a picture of a complete family and his responsibilities and his duties towards his parents.

The children of feuding couples tend to show extreme emotions. The legal separation of their parents is a time-consuming process. Till such time that the court verdict is out on the case, the mother is generally allowed custody of the child, while the father is given restricted access to the child. However, the child yearns for the other parent and often displays extreme emotions. The event was an attempt to bring the family together and if there is a rethink on the divorce then the purpose of such events is served,'' another lawyer said.

One of the parents said the exercise carried out by the family court is a out of box concept'' and in the long run could help get the desired results with the couples altering their hardened stands against one another.

Observers said, this is the first time ever that such an event has been organised in the court and that active participation of over two dozen children showed that the initiative will help reduce the feeling of bitterness between feuding parents in interest of their child.
