Parli power plant may be shut down

PUNE: Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said the 1,130-MW Parli thermal power plant in Marathwada could be shut down within a few days due to severe shortage of water.

Other plants are generating power as per availability of water, he added. "The Dabhol plant is generating only one-third of power of its total capacity, while the Uran plant is generating only half of its total capacity. The state is unable to start new power plants because of water

scarcity," he said. He added, "Maharashtra has just 18% irrigation while Punjab has 98%. If Maharashtra had even 50% of irrigation, it would have developed capacity to provide foodgrain to all states."
