MUMBAI: The Shivaji Park police arrested a MBA professional for allegedly misbehaving with a 26-year-old fashion designer on Thursday. The victim was taking a walk at the Shivaji Park ground when the accused identified as AnupNaik (26) groped her. He confessed that "he went out of control on seeing the victim alone in the park" which he made him to commit the offence.
Others who were taking a walk in the locality chased Naik and thrashed him after he tried to escape after committing the offence. "The incident happened when the victim and the accused were walking on the jogger's strip. The victim lost her balance when Naik groped and repeatedly misbehaved with her," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Dhananjay Kulkarni told TOI.
The incident occurred in between 9.30 pm and 10 pm when the victim was taking a walk at the joggers track in the park. Both the victim and the accused hail from upper middle class families. Naik stays in a residential building behind Plaza Cinema and is employed in a bank. In the complaint, the victim said, "I lost control and fell down after the unknown youth groped and pushed me. He misbehaved with me before he tried to escape. On hearing my scream few others who were walking in the park rushed for help and nabbed the accused."
The accused and the victim are not known to each other. "Naik tried to take advantage of the situation on seeing the victim alone in the park and thought could escape without getting caught. But his luck ran short when locals nabbed him. He claimed that he didn't meant to hurt the victim," said Shivaji Park police senior inspector Suresh Unavne.
Naik was booked under section 354 (outrage modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before the local court on Friday and later was released on bail.
