MUMBAI: The jail authorities in the state are engaged in compiling the profiles of hardened criminals, gangsters and terror suspects kept in the anda cell in various jails. This move came recently to protect the inmates from being attacked or killed in the jail premises.
Sources in the jail say that the department was forced to think over it after Indian Mujahideen's suspected member and Pune bomb blast conspiracy accused, Qateel Siddiqui, was killed in the Yerwada jail in June this year. Two gangsters had strangulated Siddiqui to death in the highly guarded anda cell. "The authorities are preparing files of all the hard core criminals and trouble makers in the jail. The classification of the inmates is as per their gang, group, terror outfit, their back ground, who could be their enemies and their targets etc," said a source.
The four suspects of the August 1 Pune bomb blasts, caught by the Delhi police's special cell, are likely to be brought to Pune early next week. Once their police custody is over, they all will be kept in the Yerwada jail's anda cells. "There are CCTV cameras in the anda cells but non-operational. The jail officials are in touch with the technicians to get them repaired since it will help them to monitor the situation in a better way," said a source.
Over 110 personnel, for the post of Rakshak (constables) will be recruited in the next one month. The jail authorities say that they are short staffed and hence sometimes it becomes difficult to monitor the situation in their premises. "Even in a separate area in the Yerwada prison, the convicts of the 1993 serial bomb blasts have been kept.
They include those who have been awarded death penalty and life imprisonment. A dedicated staff is there to vigil their moments. The profiling of the hardened criminals will give a clear picture of who is associated with whom and necessary remedies can be taken to avoid any riot like situation in the jails," the source added.
