MUMBAI: There are over 80,000 court cases lying pending with the civic legal department.

According to the data obtained from the legal department till February this year, the highest number cases that are pending are the ones that the civic body has filed in the metropolitan magistrate courts.

Over 10,000 cases are pending in the High court, including that of property tax, illegal construction and property related issues. These also include public interest litigation(PIL) filed by citizens in which the civic body is a party.

Civic law committee members said the large number of pending cases reflected the "failure" of the legal department.

Moreover the cases that are disposed of, consist of over 70 percent cases against the BMC( Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) leading to losses worth Rs 50 crore annually. According to the statistics, after the state government, BMC has the second highest number of litigations against it in the courts.

Officials from the legal department said that they are grossly understaffed and each lawyers ends by attending to over 10 cases on any given day.

Civic officials say that the cases are pilling up due to the shortage of staff, and because BMC is an easy target and in any case of dispute people file court cases against the BMC. "Ones all the vacant posts are filled up, the burden on the existing staff will ease and efficiency will increase," said a civic official.
