MUMBAI: According to a recent survey conducted by NGO Salaam Bombay Foundation in Mumbai, 94% of the 2500 respondents are in favor of the ban on gutkha & paan masala in Maharashtra. One of the main reasons why citizens feel the ban is essential is because of the correlation between tobacco products and cancer related diseases. Equally revealing is the fact that 91% of the tobacco consumers in the sample group also felt that the ban is justified.
Speaking about this survey, Devika Chadha, Programme Director, Salaam Bombay Foundation said, "This survey reveals the public opinion on the issue of gutkha ban in the state. It can be very clearly deduced that the citizens - be they tobacco users or not - are also in favor of this ban."
Another important aspect of this report is the likeliness of gutkha & paan masala consumers to switch to other tobacco products. 85% of the total respondents and 90% of tobacco users feel that post-ban there is great chance of gutkha, paan masala users switching to alterate tobacco products like khaini, beedi, cigarettes. "We appeal to the government to put a blanket ban on all forms of tobacco products as the survey reveals how gutkha and paan masala users may switch to consumption of other tobacco products" Devika Chadha from Salaam Bombay Foundation said.
The concern over the harmful influence of tobacco on children and their health was another reason given by respondents to justify the ban. "We at Salaam Bombay believe that the children of this country have the right to a safe, healthy future. The well-being of children was at stake due to the free availability of tobacco products and the ban is a step towards a better future for the country's youth," said Ms. Chadha.
Apart from these major revelations, the survey also focuses on awareness about the ban on gutkha & paan masala. 95% of the respondents feel that there is enough awareness about the products being banned in the state.Anda sedang membaca artikel tentang
