MUMBAI: A group of ten students from Symbiosis Institute of Media and communication (SIMC) were in the city to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of children from Dharavi. As part of their assignment, these students touched base with an NGO-Smile Foundation-which works in the slums for the development of children who have dropped-out of schools.

"We interacted with the children on a daily basis and conducted workshops for the children as well as the teachers. We also worked closely with the NGO to understand how it functions in a given situation and understood how they are striving hard to make a difference in the lives of young children," said Vaibhav Waghmare, a first year student of SIMC. A couple of students from this group also conducted workshops at Jan Shikshan Santhan in Dharavi for students studying there. "This workshop included concepts of tone and pitch with the help of voice modulation exercises for teachers. There were also students learning retail management so our batchmates taught them how to understand customers and their jobs better. We encouraged usage of proper English on their jobs," added Waghmare.

Smile Foundation benefitted with these workshops as their students could prepare for an upcoming event better with the help of SIMC students. "The students of SIMC took keen interest in helping the children in the foundation and also conducted a soft skills training workshop for the youth. It was an enriching experience for everybody," said Vijay Basak, programme officer for Smile Foundation.
