MUMBAI: The state cabinet on Wednesday decided to sanction additional funds for water supply schemes in Jalna and Osmanabad, which are facing an acute water shortage. According the government will provide an additional Rs 22 crore for the scheme in Jalna, whereas Rs 51 crore will be given for the scheme in Osmanabad.
The cost of the water supply scheme in Jalna has escalated over the years. While the state, the centre and the local body have already provided Rs 182 crore for the scheme, it requires another Rs 22 cr for completion. NCP minister Rajesh Tope, who hails from the region, raised the demand at the cabinet meet.
During discussion, questions were raised on high arrears in payment of water charges. Tope said that the per capita water charge was high and demanded financial support from the centre for all schemes where water is transported for long distances. Similarly, Madhukar Chavan, Congress, demanded additional funds for the scheme in Osmanabad, which has already been provided Rs 126 cr.
The additional funds, said sources, would be provided from funds set aside for drought relief. It was initially proposed that the urban development (UD) should provide these funds from their kitty. However, the department objected to it. Sent from BlackBerry® on Airtel
