No end to refusals even after fare hikes

MUMBAI: Although the new recalibrated meters have checked the overcharging problem, refusals by auto drivers and their rude behaviour continue to plague commuters. Consumer activists have petitioned the transport department on the refusal menace and demanded a proper redressal mechanism for commuter grievances.

Activist A V Shenoy said, "In the petition to state transport commissioner V N More, we have specifically mentioned the complaints regarding refusals and rude behaviour.

"Now that fare revision has been implemented, we only see a reduction in overcharging complaints," he said, adding that some drivers were being arrogant as they feel they have won the battle with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority on fare hikes.

Mumbai Grahak Panchayat's Shirish Deshpande said, "We are demanding a rollback in the hikes and the PIL is in court," he said. Activist Sunil Mone said there should be regular checks by officials.
