Kasab's hanging has brought some closure, says 26/11 hero

MUMBAI: Four years after the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, the heroes who helped capture terrorist Ajmal Kasab believe justice has finally been done with his hanging. "The martyrs can now rest in peace. It's a tribute to their sacrifice," said constable Mangesh Naik, who won a President's Police medal for gallantry in 2009.

"Kasab was very cunning. I can never put images out of my mind of how he instantly pumped bullets into assistant sub-inspector Tukaram Omble, as the latter grabbed the nozzle of his AK-47. We have been waiting all this while, wondering when Kasab would be hanged. It's better late than never," said Naik, who is presently attached with the Malad police station.

"My family was frantic with worry when they saw news of the terror attack on television that fateful night. I was on night duty and posted with the DB Marg police station. My wife kept calling me. But we were conducting nakabandis at Girgaum Chowpatty and I couldn't take her calls. I only returned home the next afternoon, by which time my family had panicked completely," Naik recollected.

Naik said the government had waited way too long to hang Kasab. "He had a rifle and we had nothing but lathis to combat him. I was glad to hear of his death on Wednesday. The past four years have been agonizing for everyone who had fought Kasab or had lost a dear one because of him and his aides. There's finally some closure," he added.
