MUMBAI: The Christian community in Vasai has demanded fresh probe into the murder of retired priest Father Bombacha in April 2010.
Last month, the Vasai sessions court acquitted the two tribal youths arrested in connection with the murder for want of evidence. Father Peter Bombacha (75) was found murdered in his first floor residence at Barampur in Vasai (west) on April 29, 2010. He stayed alone in the flat.
The ground floor housed a chapel where people prayed in the mornings. Bombacha had 13 stab wounds on his body and a pair of scissor was stuffed into his mouth. The local crime branch of the Thane rural police on November 1, 2010, arrested two tribal daily wage labourers from Vikramgad Subhash Kakad and Rajesh Kakad, both 20 years.
The two youths who had begun construction work in the prayer hall just four days before the murder were accused of killing the pastor while they were cleaning out the house. Subhash was accused of stealing holy vessels__ a brass chalice and Monstrance__, which he assumed to be gold and wanted to sell it to fund his wedding preparations.
Rajesh was accused of aiding in the murder. Pulling up the police for its shoddy investigation, Judicial Magistrate R M Joshi had expressed surprise as to how the police had failed to obtain the finger prints of the two accused if they had opened the door with the keys thrown by the victim. The mobile phones of the accused men were also not examined by the police. Vasai City Congress President Michael Furtado wrote to the state home minister R R Patil demanding a fresh probe into the murder. Furtado pointed out how the court had pulled up the police for lack of evidence against the suspects. Furtado said that the priest had been brutally murdered and his killers were roaming freely.
