Legal experts say the confession and recovery of the stolen goods strengthened the evidence against Ansari in the case.
Moreover, Ansari also confessed before some witnesses, to entering two other flats, on the second and fourth floors, in the same Bandra building, before entering the Spanish woman's flat and raping her. However, police denied any knowledge of this.
Ansari had already been recognized by the victim in an identification parade but in the absence of a confession or recovery of the stolen goods, the case had so far hinged on DNA evidence from the victim's home.
Which police hoped would link him to the crime. However, with Saturday's recovery of most things he stole from the rape victim's house and that of a senior citizen, police now have almost all pieces of the puzzle in place. Police will now take Ansari to each spot to reconstruct the entire sequence of events of November 5.
Bandra police had initially picked up Ansari for questioning along with a few other thieves who are known to scale drainage pipes of buildings to commit burglaries. Ansari was well acquainted with the Bandra-Khar area and had committed 13 offences there earlier, with five cases pending against him in Bandra and eight at Khar. Besides, there are 11 cases against him in Byculla. However, he became a key suspect when police found abrasions on his hands and he gave evasive replies during questioning.
After initial interrogation, police requested the court that Ansari be remanded to judicial custody to enable them to conduct an identification parade as the victim wanted to leave for Germany at the earliest. In the identification parade, the victim identified Ansari as the rapist, confirming initial police suspicions about his involvement. On Friday, Ansari was remanded to police custody till November 16, following which police interrogated him extensively to get him to reveal about where he had hidden the stolen items.
Police had initially searched Ansari's house where they found a purple shirt, torn under the sleeves and a pair of blue jeans, which fitted the victim's description of the clothes worn by the rapist at the time of the incident.
Ansari had entered the third floor flat of the Spanish woman on Monday at around 2am, threatened her with a knife and asked for gold. She ran out of the flat and banged on a neighbour's door for help, but there was no one in the flat. The accused then dragged her inside and raped her, threatening her with the knife. He searched the house for valuables and found some foreign currency. He smoked a cigarette from a packet the victim kept near the bed and then raped her again. He then threatened the victim to clean him with her gown and also forced her to clean herself with the same gown. The gown, if recovered, will form a crucial piece of evidence along with a camera, a watch and the foreign currency he stole while fleeing from her flat, which have now been found.
Earlier that night, Ansari tried to enter a bungalow but was chased away by a watchman. He then climbed to the fourth floor flat of a neighboring building from where he stole a mobile phone and Rs 5,000 from the house of a senior citizen, Neela D'souza (79).
